The general public are welcome to gather outside the entrance to Newgrange on each of the mornings from December 18th to December 23rd inclusive. Visitors can park at the Brú na Bóinne Visitors Centre and take a shuttle bus to Newgrange. The Visitor Centre will be open from 8am. Take exit 9 from the M1 motorway, travel about 5km to the village of Donore, turn right passing Daly's Pub Restaurant on the right, travel about 1km, the Visitor Centre cark park is on the right hand side.

Visitors can also access the Newgrange monument site directly from the N51 (Slane / Drogheda Road), the gates will be opened about 8:30am.

The eastern horizon brightens about 8:45am, a sun beam enters the passage at 8:55am and reaches the chamber at 8.58am. When the solstice lottery winners emerge from the chamber about 17 minutes later, those waiting outside are brought into the chamber in groups.

There is no charge for access to the Newgrange Winter Solstice sunrise, however normal charges apply at the Visitors Centre from 9am.

The Winter Solstice Lottery Draw took place in September, the lucky applicants' have been notified and assigned a morning between Saturday December 18th and Thursday December 23rd inclusive.
