About Richard Thomas
Richard Thomas trained as a stone carver with the Compagnons du Devoir. He later worked in the restoration of historic monuments at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg and in the cathedral workshop in Basel.
Thomas developed his sculpture outside formal academic art training. His experience included contact with artists in France, Switzerland and Ireland. While living in Ireland, he was influenced by Irish art of the seventh to ninth centuries and by the abstract forms found in that artistic tradition.
Stone Carving and Sculpture
The geometry of stone cutting, known as stereotomy, is an important element in Richard Thomas's work. Geometric and helical lines appear in a number of his sculptures, reflecting his background as a skilled stone carver and his interest in the traditional methods of the craft.
Thomas has worked with limestone, marble and Belgian blue stone. He also spent fifteen years working in the cathedral workshop in Basel, where his restoration work included a monumental spiral staircase completed in 2001.
